Baby Bag Blues
Tired of lugging around the equivalent of your body weight in your diaper bag? It’s time to lighten up and consider a diaper bag that fits only the essentials.
We’ve found a handful of bags that will hold everything you need to take care of your baby while on an outing, yet don’t add significant bulk to your load.
Skip Hop has a terrific bag called the Pronto. This highly portable bag is a top seller and for good reason. It combines style with function. We’re big fans of the denim print–it resembles our favorite pair of jeans–the one’s we’ve set our sites on fitting into again!
The Pronto bag unzips to reveal an extra-wide changing pad. The pad has an innovative cushion built into the area where baby will rest his head. The Skip Hop team cleverly included a zip-off pouch with space for wipes and diapers. The front of the bag features two “jean pockets”–a perfect spot to store pacifiers or small toys. The spare bag also has an exterior pocket for mom’s gear (key, wallet, and cellphone). Another mom-friendly feature is the adjustable strap. It works attached to a stroller or simply slipped on your wrist–couldn’t be simpler.
Fleurville has a tiny diaper bag that’s perfect for parents trying to be environmentally conscious. In fact, Fleurville is recognized as one of the leaders in creating earth-friendly products in the parenting world. They earned this reputation by becoming one of the first PVC-free companies. Many of their newest products are designed with Green-LAM, a polyurethane laminate that has low impact on the environment. We adore the Fleurville Escape Pod.
The sleek Escape Pod is a wipe case and diaper pocket. Like all Fleurville bags, this one has built-in moisture repellency and is extremely sturdy. But we also love the functionality. The Escape Pod has a compact changing cloth and oodles of compartments to keep mom and baby organized. There’s even a carabiner clip to make access to your keys a snap. Think about how many times you’ve rummaged in your humongous diaper tote in search of those elusive items!
And if a small bag simply won’t cut it in your world, examine the Kalencom diaper tote. Available in several beautiful patterns, this diaper bag is both roomy and comfortable. The bag features a zippered top, lined pockets, a large fold-out changing pad, and a decorative buckle.
With these four great choices, there’s no reason you can’t lighten up for summer.

How to Safely Transport Your Baby’s Food
When planning a trip with your baby for the first time, you’re probably wondering what the best method to transport your baby’s food is. When it comes to babies that are not breastfed, there is definitely a lot more preparation involved. For instance, if you are taking a long car trip, it may be best to take a whole jar of formula. However, if you are only going away for the morning or afternoon, packing only enough for a few bottles may suffice.
On day trips with a baby on formula, I have found it useful to pack two small baby bags. One bag should be filled with water bottles for mixing with formula. The other bag should include the baby bottle and a zip lock bag of the formula powder. Alternatively, you can use another baby bottle for the powder. Just make sure that it is completely dry before adding anything. It would also be wise to invest in a bottle warmer. These usually cost about fifteen dollars and work very well. When you’re on the go, all you do is mix the formula, warm it up, and baby is ready to eat.
What do you do if your child is already starting to eat solid food? If your baby is on the Gerber stage one, two, or three, then you will need to make sure you take along an adequate supply of baby food. Most babies should be eating about four jars of baby food per day. So, for example, if your baby already had one for breakfast, you should only pack three jars. Make sure that you have packed at least one spoon for each jar of food and plenty of wipes. You may also want to include a snack. Most supermarkets sell small baby cookies that actually dissolve in the mouth. These work great to keep baby calm in the car until you have the opportunity to prepare food.
For babies on solid food, You’ll also want to bring along at least two zip lock bags. The zip lock bags work great if your child does not finish all of the food. You can put the top back on the jar and store the unfinished food in the bag. The zip lock bags also work well for the spoons. After your baby has finished, just wipe them off using a baby wipe and put them in the bag. This will help protect the other contents of your bag and keep you organized.
Whenever you travel with your baby, it is always important to make sure that you take the time to plan ahead. This is the key to making sure that the entire family can enjoy themselves.

The Cake bag will blend with your pre-baby wardrobe while allowing you to tote all the necessities for the wee one.
For the eco-conscious mom trying to be green and gorgeous, there’s bags from Fleurville. The brand has earned a strong reputation for bags that stand up to the demands of parenthood. Their bags could easily pass for top designer handbags, but tucked inside the swell exterior are oodles of things a new parent needs: waterproofed seams (for all those spills), zipper pockets (so nothing falls out when you’re chasing junior), fleece-lined scratch guard pockets (to protect your sunglasses and cell from damage) and other thoughtful touches.
For the laid-back California mom, Ju-Ju Be offers some beach-friendly bags. Ju-Ju Be has a knack for offering fun and funky prints. And the Be Smart Bag is the just-right size for all the gear needed to keep a toddler happy; for instance, there’s an insulated interior pouch for bottle or sippy cup. The smart team at Ju-Ju Be used waterproof linings so spill control and clean-up are a breeze. The bag is offered in eye-catching prints like tiki toffee and citrus sorbet.
Preppy moms will flock to the wares of JP Lizzy. Tasteful, timeless and well appointed, these diaper bags are a classy option for a discerning mom. I like the argyle print Diana Classic Tote Set. The well-priced set comes with four pieces all in matching prints: roomy tote, changing pad, cosmetic bag and coin purse. Isn’t it grand to have features especially for mom in a diaper bag!
